π MACRO BACKDROP β THE BIG PICTURE
This is a first-session-back, post-holiday open with MAXIMUM catalyst density. The U.S. market was closed Monday for Memorial Day while the world kept moving β and it moved a LOT. The Middle East geopolitical situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains the dominant macro theme of 2026. Since the conflict began in late February, oil has been at the center of every major market inflection point. US stock futures traded higher as markets reopened after the Memorial Day holiday, with strong momentum led by tech stocks and overall risk-on sentiment. Markets were focused on the US-Iran talks in Doha, with hopes for easing tensions and potentially the Strait of Hormuz reopening, since that corridor handles around 20% of global oil movement, so sentiment was cautiously optimistic but still tense. NewsX
The Friday close was a bullish setup. The S&P 500 rose 0.37% to close at a record 7,473.47 on Friday, and Polymarket traders priced a 91% probability the index would open higher on Tuesday. Investor sentiment improved after President Trump said on Monday that talks with Iran were "proceeding nicely," boosting hopes that a diplomatic resolution may be within reach. Oil prices fell sharply following Trump's comments. That's an enormous tail-wind heading into Tuesday. Benzinga
But the overnight session introduced fresh complications. Multiple sources β Investing.com, TradeTheNews, FinancialJuice β confirmed new US strikes against Iranian missile launch sites and vessels in the Hormuz Strait between 3:25 AM and 4:27 AM CST Tuesday. Simultaneously, backchannel Iran nuclear deal MOU negotiations were reported to be discussing the release of $24 billion in frozen Iranian funds. The market is reading this as a "deal-in-progress" scenario, not a war-escalation, which is why ES futures pushed UP despite the military action.
Pre-market sector heatmap is clear: Technology, Defense/Aerospace, Healthcare, and Small Caps lead. Energy is mixed. This is a HEADLINE-DEPENDENT session β one confirmed deal tweet from Trump could send markets +1%, one breakdown headline could reverse it. Size accordingly.
