The ice cream shop that makes money when it's cold

28 Wishes sells ice cream in Los Angeles. Below 70°F, sales fall about 20%. The weather is out of their hands. Rent isn't.

So the owners started putting about $20 a day into Kalshi weather markets, taking the cold side. The days that keep customers away now pay something back.

This is hedging. Big companies have done it for decades, buying protection against bad weather, fuel spikes and rising rates. It used to take a broker, a trading desk, and an order size no corner shop could meet.

Kalshi opens it up. Contracts on weather, fuel prices, inflation, tariffs and regulation, starting at a few dollars. Take a position on the outcome that would hurt you. If it hits, the payout softens it. If it doesn't, the contract expires and the good month was the point.

⚡ 5 THINGS TO KNOW RIGHT NOW — BEFORE THE BELL

  1. 🛢️ OIL CRACKS — Europe Diesel/Crude Release on the Table — France proposed EU nations release 50M barrels of diesel plus a 50M-barrel IEA crude release; oil fell 3%+ and Brent slipped back below $100. Our feed shows WTI under $90 and USO −4.4% pre-market. This is the #1 macro driver today.

🌍 MACRO BACKDROP — THE BIG PICTURE

The defining theme of this tape is the bond market vs. the AI trade, with oil as the swing variable. Stocks posted modest gains on the first trading day of October, clawing back earlier declines as Treasury yields retreated from their highest levels in more than 20 years. The S&P 500 added 0.19% to close at 7,666.45, the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.04% to 26,871.60, and the Dow inched up 20.51 points to 50,926.56. The internals were better than the headline: the S&P bounced more than 60 points off morning lows, paced by technology as semis and software rallied, along with industrials and energy. The Russell 2000 also outperformed after a rough month and quarter for small caps. S&P 500 closes higher to start October as Treasury yields retreat from multiyear highs: Live updates +2

Oil was the brake on Thursday — WTI gained 2.7% to settle at $92.87 as traders awaited President Trump's next move in the Iran conflict — and oil is the accelerator this morning. Oil fell after reports that EU states were discussing a French proposal to release 50 million barrels of diesel alongside a potential 50 million barrel IEA crude release, amid a global diesel shortage and U.S. pressure on Europe. Our FinancialJuice feed added that G7 leaders may talk Friday afternoon, and Macron spoke with Trump and Canada's Carney overnight on coordinated action without export restrictions. CNBCCNBC

The overnight narrative shift is clean: lower oil = lower inflation expectations = relief for yields = fuel for growth/tech. S&P 500 futures were up 0.5%, Dow futures up 276 points, and Nasdaq-100 futures up 0.8%. But the jobs report decides whether that relief sticks. Traders currently assign roughly a 75% probability to rates remaining unchanged this month, and markets need a higher bar for a strong report to revive hike bets. CNBCtradingeconomics

🤖 STOCK MARKET NEWS — SECTOR BY SECTOR

🔥 HOT SECTOR #1: SEMICONDUCTORS / AI INFRASTRUCTURE 🤖

Morgan Stanley re-crowns Nvidia as semis lead for day two

Semis carried Thursday's reversal, and the overnight Morgan Stanley Top Pick call on Nvidia gives the group a named catalyst into Friday. The AI complex also has a supportive policy backdrop after the White House AI accord earlier this week, and Alphabet rose 2% on a new flagship AI model release. Steve Jacobs' stage analysis has LRCX, AMAT, KLAC, MRVL, STX, LITE in Stage 2B and MU, SNDK in Stage 2A — the semi-equipment and memory trade remains in a confirmed uptrend structure (those tickers are watchlist-only; prices not verified). CNBC

The counterweight: ECB's Rehn flagged the risk of a sudden reversal in AI sentiment, and a Columbia study estimates AI services spending may need to hit ~8.8% of GDP by 2032 to justify today's data-center build. That's narrative risk, not a today catalyst — but it's why we take profits into strength.
