🌍 MACRO BACKDROP — THE BIG PICTURE

This is a headline-dependent session, full stop. Thursday's tape closed in the red — the S&P 500 closed down roughly 0.6% and the Nasdaq slipped as a hotter-than-expected producer price index boosted Fed rate-hike bets while WTI crude pushed above $100 a barrel. That selloff set up Friday as a battle between two forces pulling in opposite directions: an outstanding single-stock catalyst in Oracle, and a macro backdrop that keeps getting worse. The macro side is genuinely unusual right now. Markets have been repricing toward a Fed rate HIKE, not a cut, after a string of hot data, and fed funds futures now assign roughly 57% probability to a 25-basis-point hike at the September 15–16 FOMC meeting, up from under 35% in late August. Bloomberg Economics argues the shift toward 4–5% Treasury yields is structural — rising government debt, weaker global savings, higher defense spending, and the AI investment boom are all pushing borrowing costs higher, which is why the 10-year is knocking on 5% for the first time since 2008. Top White House advisers reportedly discussed with President Trump the possibility that the Iran war could drag on past Inauguration Day in January 2029, and overnight, Iran's Houthi allies in Yemen struck several energy facilities in Saudi Arabia this week, raising concerns the conflict is broadening — on top of the confirmed Bab el-Mandeb takeover. Oracle's Beat Confirms the Demand Side of the AI Buildout

Oracle's print is the story of the morning. Revenue of $19.35B beat the $19.13B consensus, adjusted EPS of $1.92 crushed the $1.74 estimate, and — most importantly for the AI narrative — cloud infrastructure (OCI) revenue doubled year-over-year to $7.4B, up 121%. That matters because Oracle reports OCI granularity that hyperscalers don't, making it one of the cleanest reads on whether enterprises are actually paying for AI compute at scale, or just talking about it. This lands days after Microsoft's own announcement that it's tripling data center capacity to 38 gigawatts — the supply and demand sides of the AI capex story are both confirming higher, not lower.

The stock had been down 22% year-to-date through Thursday's close, so this is a real technical and narrative reversal setup, not just a one-day pop. Options markets had priced roughly an 11–12% implied move into the print — the actual pre-market reaction of +6.5% suggests the market is still digesting the magnitude of the OCI beat.
